Abstract
In quantum field theory the concept of virtual particles is often considered redundant, since particles measured by a detector are always real. Nevertheless, for the process of pair creation by an external field modelling it as a tunneling of virtual particles into real ones sometimes allows one to make very nontrivial predictions, as I will show with examples from quantum electrodynamics.
